Trimmed surface to subd 2004-06-15 - By OO's mailbot
Back The short answer is no, there isn't a mathematically accurate way to convert a trimmed surface to a subd. This is because the trim is done in surface space (UV of the surface) after the surface has been subdivided. To get the same thing, softimage would have to implement trims within the subd algorithm itself.
You can get close, but you will have a lip where the curvature of the subd changes to meet the edge of your hole. Use the following trick to approximate the conversion:
1. Change the Nurbs approximation to 1x1 2. Convert to polygons 3. Create a hole in the polygon using the control points of the curve you used for the projection. 4. turn subd on. 5. adjust points positions near the hole to taste.
An alternative is to create the hole at render time, by projecting an image of the hole on the surface.
