Nick

brilliant suggestion!

sadly it didn't work in my case.
I'm using win2k. I found the path to my environmental variable, but i
couldn't browse to it. very strange; the path didn't exist!
it says the path for my environmental variable is this:
C:\Documents and Settings\Thomas Williams.DIATOM\Local Settings\Temp
but under C:\Documents and Settings\Thomas Williams.DIATOM\   there is no
Local Settings\Temp.

however, there is a mysterious:
C:\Documents and Settings\THOMAS~1~DIA\LOCALS~1\Temp
I thought, AHA! that must be it, just got truncated somehow (seems weird to
me).
but no tmp files at all in there :(
but just to double check, i launched the old dir project and then searched
under the root of where my env var is said to be, eg C:\Documents and
Settings for *.tmp
nothing.

reboot. retry . nothing.
I bet you could fish it out of there, but sadly I cannot.
oh well. it doesn't matter too much. I did get to rebuild my assets using
Roger's trick, so I am basically happy.

but thanks very much for the effort! very stealth indeed.
