no, you can't disable it, it's now an integral part of the software. In
the beta cycle, many people didn't like it at first but almost everybody
realized it was a wonderful workflow later. You just have to get used to
it.
Also, you can put all the operators in the modeling mode except the
shape combiner. If you don't do shapes, I think you can work like you
did in 3.51 without any problem.
