Construction modes force you to think about what you want to do (anim, model, .
..). However, before construction modes, if you mixed modeling with shapes and
envelopes without thinking much about what you were doing (or simply without
having a lot of experience with all that), you would then come to a point where
you don't understand what's wrong with your animation and you enveloping, and
actually you could have to redo all, because of stuff like: the envelope
assignment was done after the shape combiner.

Step this way, I have matches ready.

It's something you get used to. After a while it becomes second nature and
the problems it solves make it well worth the effort.

Give me an idea why you're changing it so much?
