Back AFAIK Mental ray uses has been using as much opengl as it could in many internal operations to speed up certain tasks, apart from that now with v3.3 you have scanline acceleration so yes, if you have a nice graphic card that will make the render even faster.
Go to the render options and under RenderMode > Scanline > Type select your OpenGL accelerated.
