Back Greetings to all new and hungry 4.0-ers, I want just inform you about slower rendering in XSI 4.0 (SOFTIMAGE dev is working on it). Overall 4.0 is stable and very cool but there's something different with Glossy Reflections and the overall speed of MR. +++ Here's a summary of what I reported:
I did a simple test scene in 3.511 with reflections and glossy on my DELL PWS650 Dual Xeon 2,8 GHz, 2GB RAM. XSI 3.511: 3:49:98 XSI 4.0 RC7: 5:13:25
Here's a link to my example database containing 2 scenes: <http://www.virtualrepublic.org/xsi/support/101603_Slow_Rendering_Example.zi p> http://www.virtualrepublic.org/xsi/support/101603_Slow_Rendering_Example.zip 300 kb
The original scene was created in XSI 3.511. The 4.0RC7 scene is the 3.511 loaded one. In Render_Pictures you will find the renderings and a Side-By-Side compare incl. rendertime info.
Also linked to: <http://www.virtualrepublic.org/xsi/support/Slow_Render_Example_Side-By-Side e.jpg> http://www.virtualrepublic.org/xsi/support/Slow_Render_Example_Side-By-Sidee .jpg 52 kb
Notice that Rendering Glossy in XSI 4.0RC7 looks much more blurred. My former renderspeed test used also a scene with Glossy Reflections.
Probably this is (one) responsible (thing) for the slower rendering: Glossy Reflections different in XSI 4.0RC7.
Some other tests without Glossy but Reflection and Refraction gave me the result that MR 3.3 is a bit slower in this case. We are talking about seconds for each frame. A 3 minute rendering will take 8 seconds longer in 4.0RC7 ... the higher the time the more the difference of course. If I get a better picture in this case no problem ... but it's not, of course
+++
Hope this helps!
Have fun with 4.0 ... IT'S GREAT!
