walked that road already, shatter has SEVERE problems owing to the fact that
it relies on booleans, and the resulting 'chunks' are a bit...well...chunky!

most of the time it fails though!

There's a free script to do this called "XSI Shatter" you'll find it in the
online tools area, under generators (modeling).  Just apply the shatter,
then you'll have to work out how ot animate the resulting parts.  Of course
you'll also have to hide/unhide at the appropriate moment the bits as
needed.
