OK, sounds like it's the way to go.  I'm just holding off until we receive
v4. :)

Thanks guys,

DAN

No, it's not true. I've been running workgroups here for over a year and at
other instalations for some time before that. I've never had problems one
either workstations nor slaves. On a tight schedule, where you're installing
custom stuff on a daily, sometimes even hourly basis, it's not practical to
do it any other way.

If you've had problems with workgroups you should throw it at support.

Is that true?  When we first setup our farm, I had to install shaders etc.
one by one per machine for reasons I won't go into.  I haven't found time to
setup the workgroup method but I always intended to, automatically assuming
it would be better..... Can you elaborate on why you think it's a bad idea?
I'm really curious....

One by one, per machine isn't that bad actually, I just run a batch through
smedge and bingo, it's all good.

Cheers,

DAN

But every user has to set the workgroup path in its preferences...
And I would not use that for render slaves, gives you more trouble than
installing it one by one.

personally, I'd set up a workgroup that all your users can see, instal there
and point all your users to it as a workgroup. The factory path would work
but you'd need to re-install every time you upgraded or re-installed Xsi.
You'd also need to isntall on each and every machine but the workgroup would
mean only the one install.

Try Factory install. This gives access to all users to the add-on. However
you still need administrator privileges to install the add-on.

Subject: How to install XSI addons with another user

I want to install an addon under another user when I'm logged on as
administrator using the fallowing command:

   xsi -i abc.xsiaddon -silent -overwrite

How can I define another user destination? The problem is that the current
user who should use the addon doesn't have the windows rights to install it.

Any ideas?
