For hardcore technical use (XSI C++ API, custom pipeline development, etc.) Xeon's combined with Intel C++ and Vtune for Linux is far better than any AMD machine, at least until there's better tools out there to optimise for Opterons and Athlon-64 (See http://lon-64.ora-code.com)'s. For normal creative XSI use, there's not that much difference, although the higher spec Xeons with more L2 cache outpace the Athlon-MPs (but at a pretty high price).
