Matthew, you can use paint or ray cast select to restrict selecting points
on the other side. If you just want to know if you have more points selected
look at the selection panel on the right and see if it shows something like:
18-21,46-49, this will give you some hints into what is currently selected.
Not exactly what you're requesting, but it helps somewhat.
