[g]Scripting in the animation editor is already possible in earlier versions by installing the command with the siFCurveCategory option so that it shows up in the edit menu and is able to get the current fcurve editor as an object, then methods like selectedFcurves and selectedKeys etc are available.

You should be using the OM way instead anyway ;)
BTW in Version 4 it should be MUCH easier to access any fcurve editor view as the desktop is now part of the OM, and be able to set up a decent interface for your tools with the new RVs, layouts etc. In fact I think one of the biggest improvements in ver4 is the control and access of the GUI in most areas. Toolmakers will love it.
