Back Actual figures in the UK are as follows (figures from Datascope for 2003)
Trainee 20k average, range 18-23k 12 - 36 months exp 26k average, range 22-33k 36 months plus 32k average, range 27-37k Senior/Lead role 36k average, range 33-44k
These figures are for the south of England, the rest of the UK is about 5% less.

~?28,000 for a starting salary in games?!?!?! Anywhere between ?12k-?24k sounds more realistic depending on company and location (cost of living).
If you're gonna be expecting $53k then you might be in for a disappointment, that sounds too high to me.
