Sadly, I do not think there is a  "brute force" method of killing the render
region. You'll have to either hit the cancel button at the bottom on the
interface or "q" mmb to cancel the region. Of course you'll have to wait for the
preliminary processing to be finished. Be careful with the q+mmb combo because
if
you hit it twice, you'll get the render region back and it'll start rendering
again.
