interactive render

I'm still pretty new to XSI, so please excuse my duh questions.

Something that really drives me up the walls is that there seems to be no way
to quickly cancel an interactive render. I would love to have the ability to
hit esc, or something of that sort, and be certain that the render is going to
stop, within a reasonable amount of time, with no further attempts at
refreshing. Is there some five-point exploding heart technique i'm missing?

and, yeah, I know you can turn auto refresh off, but it just so happens, quite
often, that I want to cancel the refresh *after* XSI starts chewing through the
render, and then it's too late, as it won't notice any more mouseclicking until
it's done. how hard would it be for XSI to check the keyboard buffer (is that
what it's called?) every once in a while to see whether esc has been hit?

thanks,

-ben
