Another option might be "Shape Rigging", ie the bones transforms plotted
to shape points clusters, then remove the animation, and obj to cluster
constrain the bones to the point clusters on the shape. Then you can use
multiple operators (like wave) on the shape for another layer of
animation on top of the orginal animation.
