Back Hi Andrew,
Don't say thay. Yes, starting can be frustrating but believe me, it will start to make sense if you persist in learning. I started two years ago but just fiddling around with online tutorials. Downloaded the VTM's from Buzz and I bought the Maya fundamentals book from New Riders. Howerver, the first year was one of frustration, I could never get things right and I felt lost. After a year things started to become better though. I even subscribed for a 3D contest and actually won (if you're interested, my submission can be found here http://henkspcservice.chez.tiscali.fr/poppetje/3d/contestv9.jpg . The subject of the contest was 'make a crime scene' and I made a drug smuggler a few hours before depart, this type of smuggling was a big issue in the Netherlands where I lived at that time). You don't want to know how much time I spent setting up the textures, all but one are procedurals btw. There's still a lot of errors in it and stuff I could not do at that time like creating eyebrows or hair. Anyway, forgive my long babbling but I just want to say, don't give up, there's light at the end of the tunnel :)
Now about your issue, how exactly are you putting the TIF file on the color attribute? One way that works is by just clicking the checker box behind the color attibute, select file and choose you tif file from there. Can you explain the steps you are following exactly?
Cheers, Xoch
