Maya hairs!

Maya hairs!

When we did the Lassie commercial using XSI hair we ran into several severe
limitations. Most of them had to do with the shading algorithms not the
styling tools or texturing methods. We also found the dynamic controls to be
... er ... less than adequate, particularly the stiffness parameters. We
submitted many requests and suggestions to Softimage... hopefully some of
these will be incorporated into a new version of the hair for the 4.0
release.

The 15 Segment thing did not really impact us all that much. One note...
more than 15 segments = more polygons to deal with at render time.

ciao

Michael

15 segments is simply inadequate if you are trying to do somehing
longer than shoulder length hair.  It might be fine for a bat but if
you need to do long hair you absolutely need more than 15 segments
since a segment or two can wind up being about an earlength long
which doesn't really cut it for me when it comes to locking points
and creating curls and waves.

There is a rather interesting anomaly with the hair system where as
the hair strand gets longer, it becomes proportionally less responsive
to dynamics since it seems that the dynamic results are applied at the
segment joint and that the segment length is not taken in to account so
much.  It definitely makes styling things and tuning dynamics difficult,
since the bangs and long hair in the back behave very very differently
with the exact same forces and dynamics settings.

I'm very curious to hear of anyone else's experiences with long hair
and how they've dealt with both the segment resolution issue and the
dynamics/strand length problem.
