Within XSI the tif's alpha channel is being used to control the transparency of the texture. What you are looking for is transparency map for the object. To do this, within the render tree, plug the texture you wish to use for transparency into the transparency factor of your illumination node. It sounds like you need want to invert the alpha you are using for your tif and use that as your transparency map.
There is a good example of how to use the render tree for transparency within the XSI tutorials. I would higly recommend starting there because the render tree can be tricky at times.
