my feeling is that , somehow , you can work this way already. UVmaps and
weightmaps let you edit/paint stuffs.
especially working with weight map is very nice IMHO
I just finished a heavy hair session and I found combing a very time
consuming process.
I thought "autocombing" as a starter then combing with paint/brush tools
would be a biiig time saver ,
then refining the ultimate details strands by strands why not.
being able to hide/unhide clusters of hairs for "clarity" while working
would be nice too.

sure . I loved the way the hairs were rendering , from behind .it was
very nice while waiting for the end of the renders ... :)
but shading and shadowing was frustrating.

by UV based hair do you mean combing with UV ?
do you really think it was a better technique than combing guides the

I thought it was really painful.
what a beautiful hairs in Maya 6.0 !!!
have you seen it ???

strands are growing from UV coord., NOT from a vertex!
you can modify the mesh as you want, and style would not glitch (not
break).
you can move the strand over the mesh by UV!

What the hair we have in XSI now... ?

may be in xsi4 we'll have a good hair, cloth, dynamic, etc ?
