If you're using 4.5 (and even 5 to a lesser degree) the render globals  
for mr are different than for the maya renderer. So if you had a pixel  
aspect ratio other than 1 in the maya render globals, you won't know it  
in the MR globals. So you can go back to the maya globals, set your  
render size to 500x500 with a PAR = 1, then switch to MR globals. that  
should work.
