You're right, combing was a pain, but positioning 'key' hairs in UV space
worked really well IMO.  I always thought that the best approach would be UV
positioning, combed with a gestural approach (like in the shave/maya example
you linked) with the results stored in UV mapped textures, which you could then
also paint onto/edit by hand if you so desired.

I was *very* intimate with FurDesigner for a while and I still feel there were
definately some things in there that were 'right'  :)

FurDesigner was not too bad considering the period . I loved the way you
could setup all the parameters along the hairs.
by UV based hair do you mean combing with UV ?
do you really think it was a better technique than combing guides the way it
is implemented now ?
I thought it was really painful.

Hey Luc, you don't have to preach the benefits of UV based hair to me, I
did 3 pretty large projects using FurDesigner which was the first commercially
available Fur Package to use this method (If I'm not wrong).  I thought it was
a better technique then and even told the folks at Softimage during the beta of
v2....

Just though a few others might get defensive...

 hello all!

what a beautiful hairs in Maya 6.0 !!!
have you seen it ???

strands are growing from UV coord., NOT from a vertex!
you can modify the mesh as you want, and style would not glitch (not
break).
you can move the strand over the mesh by UV!

What the hair we have in XSI now... ?

may be in xsi4 we'll have a good hair, cloth, dynamic, etc ?
