Ta, Kim and Jamie - a bit like what I thought.

I guess I will have to roll up my sleeves and do it by hand :)

I've never had satisfactory results using cloth alone but using cloth with a
combination of other deforms works well. Last time I used a fairly simply cloth
with some wind to get the base movement then added a couple of waves over the
top. The trick with waves and flags is to use linear waves, one or two fairly
low frequency then a couple of  high frequency on top. Vary the frequency,
speed and orientation very slightly for each wave.

If you want real fine ripples then use a Perlin noise shader to bump or
displace it.

I am working on creating a flag being pulled through the air, looking for a
nice rippling slowmotion style effect. I seem to be unable to get satisfactory
result with noise, and setting up complex systems of fans prove difficult to
control.

Noise seems to affect the flag in a non turbulent random way like a noise
field deforming the cloth rather than rippling it. I really wonder why we can't
use turbulence forces on cloth - it seems so obvious to get realistic motion
from that.

Anybody care to share a tip or two - or should I go the good old way of
hand animating it with waves and all that?

   Best Regards
