Cloth sim flag ripples?

Cloth sim flag ripples?

I am working on creating a flag being pulled through the air, looking for a
nice rippling slowmotion style effect. I seem to be unable to get satisfactory
result with noise, and setting up complex systems of fans prove difficult to
control.

Noise seems to affect the flag in a non turbulent random way like a noise field
deforming the cloth rather than rippling it. I really wonder why we can't use
turbulence forces on cloth - it seems so obvious to get realistic motion from
that.

Anybody care to share a tip or two - or should I go the good old way of hand
animating it with waves and all that?

Best Regards
