Back yeah, OK. Best way to change names and stuff is by scripting, xsibatch -script. The crashing thing, sorry, can't help you there.

Hi Kim, Open the scene in ascii mode for change the names and paths of models, objects.... And if the scene crash XSI when we open it, it is a way to extract or modify some informations of crashed scene. Patrick :)
