  | | | Freezing Particle Instances? | Freezing Particle Instances? 2004-03-24 - By Morten Bartholdy
Back Thanks for pointing out the fact that Essential has Particles now - I have Advanced but deliver models to a company that have both and assumed I had to stay away from Particles for that reason.
I am fully aware of the risk of slowdown but I stay below 30K triangles total so it is not really a problem. I agree that for other purposes it would make sense to stick with BBoxes and Instances, but for this I need to model some more after creating the basic surface.
This is a test patch showing what I need to create:

There are other ways of getting to where I want to go and for this I eventually went with Helges Scatter tool. It requires me to model base geometry with fairly evenly sized and spaced polygons in order to achieve the look I need, which is why I explored the Particle way. See this test displaying how Scatter works:
http://colorshopvfx.dk/XSI/Bulepels_test02.jpg
Basically I was curious to know if there was a way to use Particle for this and other modeling purposes, as I find that procedural modeling and especially random duplicator tools are somewhat lacking in XSI. It would really make sense to allow "full" use of the positioning and randomizing functionality of the Particle system also for modeling purposes, but maybe that is just me ;)
If Montreal has that particular problem maybe it's time they empty their wallets and go for something bigger than 14" monitors ;D

Essentials has particles since v2, so if that’s the only reason keeping you from keeping it particles, it’s a non issue
You also realize that moving from bounding boxes in the GUI and instances In rendering to real geometry is gonna be a quite massive slowdown under every aspect, don’t you ?
Last but not least, if you REALLY need to convert to objects, your only hope is in scripting.
No “expand instances on particles into a cloud of objects” command is implemented yet, I heard Montreal was planning to put one in, but then they gave up because there was nowhere in the interface to fit such a long name.

I have used particle emmision to model an uneven surface from a group of irregular spheres, using instances. Question is, is there a way to expand these instances to regular geometry so I no longer need the particle system? This is because I want to continue modeling on the new surface and I would like to get rid of the particles so I also have the option of working with the model in XSI Essential.
I tried Isners Instance Duplication script but get an error on line 39 - maybe it does not work with Particle Instances...
Any suggestions?
TIA!
