For the style of pants your character has, it doesn't need to be terribly
realistic.
The pants should be a separate object from the character.
Just store a default shape for the pants object,
and then create another shape for the same object of the pants down.
Two shapes may be a little too stiff a transition,
so you could use a few different inbetween shapes and mix between them.
Just make sure you mix your shapes in Additive (Normalize off in the shape
mixer properties)


As far as manuals go, you may not have physical hardcopy at your disposal,
but you should at least have access to all of the manuals in PDF form that
ship with XSI. I haven't had the books since 2.0.. The 2.0 ones are still
pretty handy at times though.,

The Experience CD may have the PDF's included, but I'm not sure. ..
