hey i put a little research into the old anime...

robot hunter casshan in english. and yes this live action is an adaptation
of it...

http://www.absoluteanime.com/casshan/casshan.htm

"Casshan is originally a young boy named Tosuya who, with his father,
created robots that were environmently safe. There biggest faliure was the
BK-1 android which thought the best way to save the environment was to
destroy the creatures that endanger it most, namely the human race.

When Totsya's town is destroyed and is mortally wounded, he uses one of
their machines to become Casshan in an attempt to destroy the Black King .
In the end when the Black King is destroyed, Totsuya leaves Casshan's body
and joins his parents in the great beyond. "

i searched its site and many of the links...i can't read japanese so no idea
what its being made with...
