Back The techniques used to create the work for your client are YOUR intellectual property. Everyone has their own way of rigging a character for example, some are better at it than others, that knowledge is not for sale to your client. Handing over the databases is in effect handing over your knowledge,(and hence your intellectual property.) to your competition. I would think that most countries have laws in place protecting intellectual property, unless you have a contract stating other wise... the law is on your side.

I agree with Kim and Sandy on this......
Client will GET A TAPE or FILM, and yes if he wants a scenes, here he must pay double of agreed price... - and mostly he step back...., because at the end, it will be cheaper for him to do corrections with me if database stay on my HD :) but from time to time, I make a nice additional cash with selling whole database, but that client is not going to other freelancer, he just wants all data under closed door...., and he is still my client..
final result as mentioned before, GET RIGHT CONTRACT SIGNED............

Ok Darrin - how about this one - Storyboard - Trex comes blundering in, smashing all and sundry, grabs the pack and exits screen left! You quote, Model Trex using our proprietry Modelling tools, which makes Subdee modelling a gazillion times faster - put said mesh through proprietry Rigging Techniques that allow you to easily setup Muscle deforms and jiggle using a Script or C++ Compiled Plugin - and then do animation - Does this mean that your client then gets access to all your proprietry techniques/scripts/code that allow you to keep that one step ahead of your competition, who does things on the cheap, because he hasn't got the means or know how to do these funky things - and then give it all to your competitor to do the next installment, becuase he is cheaper!!!????? Sounds like a whole load of sardines to me - Maybe in SA it can be like that, because things here are somewhat out of kilter - BUT in the realworld one does have terms and conditions, that tell the client that he is buying a Digibeta tape with a piece of Video on it, or some film or whatever, but that all the technology that went into making that small video does not go with him on a CDr! Once again, as I said before, I am sure that ILM would not let you walk out of there with your great MetroFM job on tape under one arm, and a whole bunch of Databases under the other!!!
