3D ownership. 2004-03-10 - By Adam Seeley

I believed generally that the client pays for the finished product and the artist retains ownership of the resources that create that final product e.g. databases, models etc.
Out of interest would a musician who has composed a piece for a client be expected to hand over all samples and the sequencing files?
May well depened on which country you work in.
This is why contracts exists of course.

If the client who has paid you money to create the database, asks for it, you give it to him. No questions! Unless, in a previous agreement, you offered to cut the costs of the project but retain all future use of the database and meshes etc, you do NOT have ownership of the database. If a plumber puts in your pipes for you to use, he cant come over and take them for another project.

I don't know how many times this issue has been discussed before but...
What's to be done when the client asks you to deliver all the 3D databases, meshes, etc...
We know that It's our ownership, but is there a way to point at some precedent or law that backs up our rights?
Dave.
