X-MEN2 Nightcrawler Bamf in Maya Fluids

One problem you may have with Maya fluids is going from one
ordered state(character) to another (up someone's nose).
Normal fluid dynamics will tend to diffuse smoke over time,
not concentrate it(i.e increase entropy). Particles are not
as bound by this tendancy as goal forces will allow them
to converge, so you may wish to use particles.

One idea is to use a camera projection of your character
onto the particles(emitted into the shape of the character)
and in the particle create function set them to this color.
As the particles evolve you can quickly transition the per
particle color to your smoke color and use a goal object in
the guy's nose along with some turbulence and possibly curve
follow. For a good effect you may need a large number of fine
particles. If one had many shots, like in X-men then it would
be worth the time to create a setup that responded well in a
variety of situations. For a single shot, however, you can
probably handle much of it with compositing and cheats.

I only have access to a license of Complete and I am starting a job
which requires me to make this guy turn into a smoky shadow and go up
someone's nose, my reference is the nightcrawler. I read that the
nighcrawler had proprietary software used, would anyone recommend the
Maya Fluids Learning DVD?.   What angle should I attack.
