I trying to save what is viewed in the viewports i.e. points, centre,
hard edges and to have the ambient light off every time I start up. Just
a whole lot of little things.
It could be done in Softimage and I assumed it could be done in XSI. Can
it be done?

In XSI you don't need to manually save a preset. David thought you
wanted to carry around your preferences which you would find the folder
he mentioned. In general XSI should save any change in the preferences
automatically; what setting exactly are you trying to save? Not
everything can be configured and stored...
