My source is 8 bit, but the result needs to be
16-bits, not just the output file, but the processes
need to be 16-bit.  So if for example, I blur the heck
out of a big white circle, I will have 16-bit greys
not 8-bit.  So everything up to the output is handled
as 16-bits regardless of the source depth, and not I
am not just putting 8-bits of RGB into a 16-bit image?
