Can you use an environment shader, rather than a sphere for reflections?
This worked if I plugged the checkerboard into the reflective input of the
phong. (it needed to be run through an invert and colour correction node as
well to play with the reflection level).

 I'm sorry I am really going back to basics here... but I am pulling my
hair out trying to crack it... and I have failed !!!
  Below is a simple script, I have made two spheres a small one and a big
one for reflections
 I have plugged a checker texture in to control the transparancy !!!

 why can I see reflections and specular where there should be clean holes
??????

 Please HELP
