Thanks for the help Homam and Guy. Ok, line rendering is straight forward.
For text I found something based on Freetype here:
http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/henryj/code/index.html#FTGL
I don't mind aliasing at all so it looks like it does more than I ever need.
