Back I don't believe there's any way to get the vector renderer to output an alpha...huge, huge omission. Other huge ommisions include lack of suport for pre-post render mel's, super-high teselation requirements to get smooth interior highight/shadow curves. If I remember correctly render layers don't even work right when using the v. renderer (but I could be wrong on that one...its been a while).
I'd say you just have to resort to old fashion color/intensity keying in post...One good thing is that outputting a higher res image with the v. renderer doesn't really affect render times...so go ahead and output at double res and key from that...
