aside from cleaning non-manifold geometry,
also make sure that you don't have 2 vertices in places where you think you
have only 1.

Just select all vertices and do a merge vertices command with a really small
value.  That should fix any double vertices.

Then try to convert to subd.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Hope I'm posting this right.

I'm following a tut out of Maya Character Animation by Jae-jin Choi and I'm
getting odd results. It's a simple head modelling tutorial. Started out
with the create polygon tool to draw a profile, extrude the edges, then use
the convert poly to subdiv tool to get a subd surface to work with from
there. Problem is the convert poly to subdiv won't work. I check the
scripteditor and get a message about one or more vertices being nonmanifold,
and I should run Polygons -> Cleanup with the nonmanifold option on to
correct this. I do so, then do the convert poly to subdiv and I get an odd
subdiv surface where the faces seem to have been smoothed individually and
don't actually come in contact with each other.

So. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Sherif.
