Back seems like a hot new topic. I would suggest limiting XSI to use the number of physical CPUs you have. This way, the virtual CPU swill be used to give you more responsive UI, which is what hyperthreading is meant for. So let's say you have a dual Xeon with Hyperthreading on. You have two 'real' CPU, although the task manager in XP will show you 4. Two of them are virtual and not full CPUs. Try starting like this xsi.bat -thread 2 if you have a single CPU it would be xsi.bat -thread 1 The gain you will get from using all 4 'virtual' CPU is very minimal, and can actually be a lost of performance in some cases (I'm told it slows down hair for example), so don't feel bad about this. Think about the virtual CPU as a way to get a more responsive PC in general as oposed to another CPU. I think it's a very good idea to enable hyperthreading, but limiting XSI and mental ray to using only the physical CPUs.

Howdy all, is there a way to set a programs cpu priority when you start it? (so XSI automatcily starts in 'Below Normal') my machine is almost unusuable (dual 3ghz xeon, HT on) when rendering, even a region. when I have it set to Normal. when I remember I set it manually...but its a pain when I forget :( Specs - Dual 3ghz Xeon, HT enabled 2gb Ram WinXP Pro sp1. cheers James, James De Colling XSI / Shake Fuse @ Mrppp Ph: +61 3 9690 4044 Mb: +61 411 334 470 james@(protected)
