reminds me of the days when you had to scale everything up by 1000 times to
perform a boolean in ol' Soft 3D.......hmmmmmmmm

Softimage|3D and XSI don't have a specified unitsize, it can be anything
you want. This might be a bit confusing coming from another package,
like 3dsmax where this can be a big issue.
If you look at the basic character man/woman, you could say a SI unit is
about 10cm.

This is from the manual:

Throughout XSI, lengths are measured in SOFTIMAGE units. How big is a
SOFTIMAGE unit? It is an arbitrary, relative value that can be anything
you want: a foot, 10 cm, or anything else.

However, it is generally recommended that you avoid making your objects
too big, too small, or too far from the scene origin. This is because
rounding errors can accumulate in mathematical calculations, resulting
in imprecisions or even jittering in object positions.

As a general rule of thumb, an entire character should not fit within 1
or 2 units, nor exceed 1000 units.

Hope this clears things up a bit,

Cheers,
