im running win 2000 pro sp4, yes got the 1246 spm version and yes i can remove
it from the remove program window.

 What OS and Service pak are you using?  Are you installing the latest version
1246 which you can find here

 http://www.softimage.com/Products/xsi/v3/Downloads/spm.asp  If it shows up
can you remove the SPM software from the add remove programs

 menu in Control Panel?

 

 Lastly have you searched the archives and knowledge base

have disable firewall and antivirus protection and i still get this message:

 installation of the NT service[spm license server] as failed.

 license server will not run.

 to install the service later on do:lictools -install

 

 where can this command be done(anyway if ots the solution)

   anyway do the usual bunch of checks, are you logged in as administrator ?
is TCP/IP working properly ? do you have an antivirus or a firewall that is
monitoring ports ?
