Back IK wouldn't dream of using Xsi with a laptop pad. Aside from the genuine risk of injuring your hands, I don't think it's practical.
I use a really neat wireless mouse - don't get a small one - you'll regret it when you get older - get a standard one and if you can fine one like mine where the very small usb transceiver tucks inside the mouse when unplugged you won't have problems with portability.
