It won't work with instances created with the particle instancer - they're not
genuine instances. The node you are selecting is probably the 'instancer' node
itself which is a different thing to an instance.
If you want to 'bake' the results of a particle instancer you'll have to try
something else. Maybe someone out there will have a MEL script?

This is really starting to baffle me. Ive tried doing the 'delete -un'
on both my computers a home and my machine at work...I still get the
same result: an exact duplicate of the first instance.
For this simple test, Im creating some particles with the particle
tool, making a cube and intancing it to the particles. I then select
the 'instance1' node and do 'duplicate -un'...the result is an
'instance2' node not an object.???
What is going on here? i feel like im going insane...anyone?
