Maya 4.5 to 5 on Older Hardware 2003-12-09 - By Dru Abrams
Back I think you'll be ok. I've used both 4.5 and 5 on my old sgi 320 p3 500 and though its generally a useless 'puter at this point, speed wise the 2 versions are pretty close (and both run fine on that sys. from what I can tell).
The vector renderer is software based...so it'll run on anything. You might be thinking of the hardware renderer...Not sure on that question.
