Is this the same object or different ones?
If you're getting problems with an object, you could try saving it out as a
model and load it into a clean scene, to see what happens. Also, you could
try duplicating the object, freeze it and work on that. Just as a
comparison. Sometimes a duplicate can behave better.

Yes. Sometimes it will happen right after freezing, though it nearly never
happens on the first edge I add with the tool (without leaving the addEdge
UI).
Chances go up after that. If the lag between the first and second add goes
up
noticeably I have a chance to save it. However, sometimes it happens on the
second add,
and I lose it. I've been pressing control+s pretty much every time I hit \.
