Back Hello cobus and jeff
Excellent question and equally excellent answer. Jeffs sollution is good in terms of facilitating specific object modeling control and having a look at transparancy as an effect . I have just tried Jeffs method it works well and adds to a method I have been working with..
I think you will find the following information useful. Of course use either or both as you choose.
1): Use material editor I assigned a mattpreview (it has bars across the material) to the color assignment box.
2): With the color selection box opened and using color you like including the color of the object you are working with I brought up the transparancy adjustment tool to change the gradiant resolve of objects color.
The result is :transparancy level control and can be used in a reverse modeling effort to the one you are working on. For example : a solid figure with transparent or clothes to get the see through effect.
If I render the scene or the objects the transparancy is still effective whereas rendering with jeffs method the render is a solid object....(as far as I know) and which may be what you are looking for.
I think there are other methods as well but these two combined allow for preview selection testing of an objects state while deciding on whether to commit time to refining the effect further with the effect.
A very useful question and equally useful answer, thanks I will add it to my knowledgebase

Dave, thanks for the input.
But now I have another question: can someone please teel me how to set different display options for individual objects? I want to model clothing around a figure, so I want the figure to be semi-transparent whiel the clothing is in solid display mode.
Thanks a stack!
