Back Use a maliable metal bar form like a sewing needle for the stitching. Stiff and sturdy yet forms tight and firm.
How about creating some kind of metal form. make it slightly angular that it enters at the point of the leather and slides along at a slight angle so that the thickness of the skin only is attached. To make it realistic allow the angle to level off for a bit then angle back upwards towards the leather where it exits out. Continue this pattern maintaining the contours of the face skin in relationship to the leathers.
Yeucks - plastic bloody surgeon anyone

I've tried stitches, but they are so small they are not really vizable farther away.
I've thought of screws, but, would that make sense at all - I really wouldn't see how that could be realistic, maybe it doesn't have to be?
I think the idea I have been leaning toward, is using leather straps in an X shape and positioning them around the face plate. Really though, wouldn't that tear through the flesh. Again, maybe it doesn't matter.
I'm looking for some suggestions. I have spent a lot of time looking at other characters, trying to come up with my own creative way to make it look like the face plate has replaced the lower half of his face. If only I wasn't having a creative block.
