Back Hi Matt,
it's easy to think in terms of real world relationships when modeling, but one advantage modelers have (unless they are designing real world objects) is that when putting things together, you can ignore where they overlap. As long as there aren't any unsightly gaps, the resperator can have any shape where it is hidden inside the head, just as the head can look any which way where it is hidden by the mask. When you put the two together, it might be useful to follow the line of 'attachment' with a spline (easy to do in solid display) to use for a 'welt' or something similar.
