Boolean after NURBS conversion

Boolean after NURBS conversion

I've been playing around with using the Skin surface feature in the
NURBS modeling.

It works very nicely, I got the effect I wanted on the prow of a boat
pretty easily.  Ultimately though I want the boat to be a shell (not
just a surface).  Adding the width has been driving me crazy.

I tried to convert it to a polygon and then just do a boolean
subtraction with a copy of the object shrunk down just a bit, but when I
try that the boolean operation does not work properly at all.  I also
tried the "shell" tool instead of object subtraction, but that didn't
work well either.

I suspect that the polygon isn't quite converted properly when going
from a NURBS to polygon, or at least so that the boolean operations get
happy.

Any techniques that people have used to make this kind of thing work?
