Personally, I can't say enough good things about C4D. Powerful, extremely
stable (I've crashed every other demo: 3DS, LW, XSI, but not C4D), very easy-to
-use, well documented (over 3,000 pages of manual...free to download) and a
supportive community (downloaded over 1 Gb of free flash tutorials so far).
Many old time tS'rs are in that space (I even think Adam Trachtenburg was a
beta tester for v9). The only thing which C4D Studio can't do is hair and
water (fluid simulation), but you can purchase plugins for those. Honestly, it
can do pretty much everything else exactly as you would expect (no glitches or
gotcha's) and the learning curve is a joy.
Unfortunately, it is very pricey - C4D Studio is just slightly under the cost
of 3DS - but as RorrKonn noted, there are other price points for teachers,
students, side-grades and you can purchase modules separately.
