I've been non-communicative for quite some time (moving, settling in, and now am once again moving, this time to Houston), but I happened across this and decided to throw in my $0.02 worth.
Collaboration can mean different things in different contexts. THe important thing is to get the project people to specify as precisely as possible (if that's possible in these days of non-logic...) what responsibilities each project member has, and what exactly will be done with your work. IOW, a contract. ((*Always* get a contract.))
If they need models but need to apply certain textrues, that shoudl be specified. If they want you to reate an entire scene, but need specific lighting so that the shadows and so on mesh into other scenes or the overal gestalt of the project, that also needs to be specified.
For some resason, alot of people seem to think that a contact "inhibits creativity" or some such nonsense, in the same way that a lot fo poeple think that talking about finances and other such practicalities is "unromantic". but remember how high divorce rates are - and how many legal problems occur in business.
Working without a contract is something like trying to build a house without any plans. Witha good plan, the structure goes up properly, you get the colors etc. that you request, and then you can decorate and landscape ti to your heart's content. Without a plan, you're likely to end up sitting in the middle of a pile of wood and sheetrock as the thing falls down around your ears.
So long as everyone who's involved in the project is clear abgotu what they are suppsoed to be doing, AND on what will and will not be done to or with the creative work each person does, then a project can be a lot of fun, or at the least, a useful and sometimes even profitable =;-) expereince.
