OT: Planets 2005-03-05 - By Ed Baker
Back Hey Bill,
Thanks. It's my first try with the imager. It has about the magnification of a 9mm eyepiece from my understanding. These images were taken with my Meade 5 inch DS-2130 reflector.
I just recently also purchased a 2x Barlow, but am waiting for an adapter since it has a 1.25" barrel, and my scope has a .965". I have a 3x Barlow that fits, but the optics are poor.
The Lunar Planetary Imager is made by Meade, and is a CCD albeit a simple one. From what I've read, it's basically a glorified webcam of sorts, but you can control exposure times from .001 to 16 seconds. The software that it comes with also helps by taking multiple exposures and then compositing them into a single image with some automatic processing.
Meade has two CCDs that are in the affordable range (for me :) ): The Lunar Planetary Imager: http://meade.com/autostar/lpi.html And the Deep Sky Imager (Which has much longer exposure times at twice the cost): http://meade.com/dsi/index.html
Thanks, Ed
